Blog Post 3: What To Expect At Your Initial Assessment
What to Expect During the Physical Exam:
Assessing Your Body’s Function
The physical exam is an essential part of your initial assessment, and it’s where we gather key information about how your body is functioning. This step allows us to identify any areas of imbalance, weakness, or dysfunction that might be limiting your movement or causing pain. Here's what we focus on during the exam:
Muscle Imbalances: Strength imbalances between muscles can lead to overuse injuries and pain. We’ll assess your muscle strength and look for any weaknesses or asymmetries that might be contributing to your discomfort.
Posture and Alignment: Poor posture can contribute to long-term discomfort and injury. We’ll assess how you stand, walk, and move to identify any misalignments that may need attention.
Range of Motion and Flexibility: Limited flexibility or joint mobility can affect your performance and quality of life. We’ll evaluate how well you move through different motions, identifying areas where you may be stiff or restricted.
Functional Movement: In addition to static testing, we’ll evaluate how you move in dynamic situations (like squatting, lifting, or walking). This helps us identify improper movement patterns that can lead to injury over time.
Gait Analysis: Doing a gait analysis allows us to see how the body is moving and taking forces while running or walking. From here we can determine any strength, drills or treatments we should add in our plan of management.
Through these assessments, we gain a deeper understanding of your body’s mechanics and start to build a picture of where treatment and intervention are needed to help you optimize you mind, body and performance!
