Your core is not your abs. It is the entire muscular system that stabilizes your spine, pelvis, and ribcage through every step, pedal stroke, and change of direction. It is what keeps you upright when you are fatigued, protects your lower back from the cumulative load of training, and transfers force efficiently from your legs to the rest of your body. A weak core does not just limit your performance. It creates compensatory movement patterns that lead to injury.

The exercises in this library are the ones I prescribe most in the clinic. They are not random. Every movement here is chosen because it builds the kind of core stability that translates directly to endurance sport: anti-extension, anti-rotation, and anti-lateral flexion. These are the movements that teach your core to resist unwanted motion and maintain a stable platform under load.

The key to getting the most out of these exercises is control. Speed does not matter here. What matters is your ability to maintain a neutral spine, engage your deep core muscles, and move with intention. A slow, controlled rep with full engagement is worth ten rushed ones where your lower back compensates or your hip flexors take over. Quality is everything here.

Low Plank

The foundational anti-extension core exercise. This teaches your core to resist the pull of gravity and maintain a neutral spine under load. If your hips sag or your lower back arches, that is the most important signal. Your deep core is not yet strong enough to hold the position, and this exercise is doing exactly the right job.

Modified Side Plank


A regression of the full side plank performed from the knees rather than the feet. This reduces the load while maintaining the same anti-lateral flexion demand. If the full side plank is not yet accessible, this is where we start.

Side Plank

Targets the obliques and quadratus lumborum, the muscles responsible for resisting lateral flexion and maintaining pelvic stability during single leg loading. This is one of the most important exercises for runners and triathletes because it builds the lateral core strength that prevents hip drop and compensatory movement patterns.

Side Plank with Hip Dip

Adds a dynamic component to the side plank by lowering and raising the hips through a controlled range of motion. This progression challenges the obliques and lateral core stabilizers while building strength through movement, not just static holds.
