Blog Post 2: Core Strength Exercises

Your Shield Against Low Back Pain:

Introduction:

Ever tried to lift something heavy and felt that dreaded twinge in your back? It’s the worst! Dr. Keirstyn’s goal is to help educate her community on making sure that does not happen. Building core strength is one of the best ways to protect your back and stay active.

The Link Between Core Strength and Back Pain:

A weak core can lead to all sorts of problems, especially when it comes to your lower back. When your core muscles aren’t strong enough to support your spine, you’re more susceptible to pain and injuries. By strengthening your core, you create a natural shield that helps prevent low back pain, making it easier to enjoy the activities you love.

Effective Core Strengthening Exercises:

Here are some fun and effective exercises to help you build a strong core:

  1. Planks: Start in a push-up position and hold for 20-60 seconds. Engage your abs and keep your body in a straight line. Try variations like side planks for an extra challenge!

  2. Side Planks: Lie on your side, elbow under your shoulder, feet stacked. Lift hips to form a straight line head to feet. Hold for as long as possible with the maximum of 1 minute.

  3. Bird-Dogs: Start on all fours. Extend your right arm and left leg simultaneously, keeping your core tight. Hold for a second or two, then repeat on the opposite side. This exercise improves balance and coordination!

  4. Modified Crunch: Lie on your back with your right knee bent with the foot on the ground and left leg straight. Place your right hand under the low of your back. Crunch up to the sky slightly, hold for a second or two and come back down. Repeat 10-15 per side.

Conclusion:

The best part? You don’t need to spend hours at the gym. Just a few minutes a day can make a significant difference! Dr. Keirstyn finds the sweet spot to be doing ~10 minutes 3-5x/week. Staying consistent is key!

In our next post, we’ll explore fun ways to keep your core strength up through unstructured activities and staying consistent. Get ready to unleash your inner athlete!
