Blog 2: Chiropractic for Endurance Athletes:
Learn About Diversified, Evidence-Based, and Athlete-Focused Chiropractic Care
Part 2: Education, Training, and Scope — How We’re Prepared to Treat Athletes
In Part 1, we talked about what it really means to be a Diversified CMCC-trained chiropractor and why endurance athletes benefit from a clinician who’s not just in the clinic, but also in the sport. As a chiropractor, endurance coach, and lifelong athlete, I know how important it is to understand the body in theory and in motion — because that’s how injuries happen, and that’s how performance improves.
So let’s dive into what it takes to earn that level of expertise — and why it matters for athletes like you.
Eight Years of Rigorous Training
Many people don’t realize that becoming a chiropractor in Canada is not a short weekend course or certificate program. It’s a serious, rigorous path: four years of undergraduate studies followed by four years earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree at CMCC, plus hundreds of hours of supervised clinical training.
That’s eight years of education focused on:
Anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics — understanding exactly how muscles, joints, and tissues work together
Neuroscience and nervous system function — how the body communicates and compensates
Functional movement and exercise prescription — helping athletes move efficiently and prevent injury
Soft tissue techniques, joint mechanics, and manual therapy — hands-on approaches to restore mobility and tissue health
Evidence-informed clinical decision-making — learning to integrate research with real-world patient care
Those eight years give us the foundation to not just treat injuries, but to understand the athlete as a whole system — how tissue load, training volume, and movement patterns all interact.
Clinical Experience: Learning to Assess and Treat Safely
Beyond the classroom, CMCC emphasizes real-world clinical experience. During supervised rotations, we:
Diagnose and treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions
Practice rehab planning and movement assessment
Learn how to safely progress exercises and manual therapy
Collaborate with patients and other healthcare providers
And yes — I know the big fear some people have: “Can you snap someone’s neck?” The truth is, we don’t just “crack things and hope it works.” Our training teaches us to:
Recognize red flags that need further medical assessment
Identify conditions where certain techniques aren’t safe
Choose the right treatment for the right patient at the right time
Monitor responses and adjust based on how you feel
This is where your voice and comfort matter. Chiropractic is a team-based approach: you, me, and any other members of your performance team. If something feels uncomfortable or isn’t the right fit for your body that day, we don’t do it. Your feedback guides every decision — because your safety and confidence are always the priority.
Think of it like tuning a high-performance bike: you don’t just crank the gears and hope for the best. You adjust, you test, you listen to the rider — that’s how we keep you safe and performing at your best.
Why This Education Matters for Endurance Athletes
Endurance athletes put their bodies through repetitive, high-volume stress: running, cycling, swimming, and multisport training. Small biomechanical inefficiencies, tissue fatigue, or mismanaged load can quickly lead to injuries that sideline training and threaten performance goals.
Because of my background as a lifelong athlete and endurance coach, I approach injuries with empathy and practical solutions. The knowledge I gained from CMCC allows me to:
Assess movement and tissue load to identify what’s limiting performance
Apply targeted treatments that restore mobility, reduce pain, and enhance recovery
Collaborate with coaches, physiotherapists, RMTs, sports physicians, and other specialists to build a complete performance team
Help athletes continue training safely while repairing injuries
It’s not just about cracking joints or stretching muscles — it’s about helping your body and training plan work together.
